As several refrigerants have been phased out of use because of their ozone-depleting properties, engineers have found ammonia to be an attractive choice. For the past 100 years, ammonia has been the refrigerant of choice for use in industrial systems. This article explains ammonia’s low cost, availability, high-efficiency characteristics and how to incorporate its use into today’s scroll compressors.
