BACnet marks its 20th anniversary this year as ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135. It has since been embraced internationally as ISO Standard 16484-5 and a national standard in many parts of the world. How has BACnet survived so long? This article looks at some of the factors that have made the protocol so successful and describes some of the features that have evolved over the last 20 years.
