Identifies the factors that allow properly operating variable air volume VAV) systems to provide excellent temperature and humidity control, deliver outside air to conditioned spaces in amounts sufficient to satisfy ASHRAE Standard 62 and met all criteria required for acceptable indoor air quality, while having lower utility costs than comparable constant air volume systems. Concentrates on the factors that compromise the successful performance of VAV systems and their results. Supplies observations of causes of incorrect operation made during visits to buildings in response to occupant or owner complaints. Lists six factors which, when elements of them fail, cause VAV systems to have adverse and often violent reactions. Recommends that most VAV systems be designed, installed, started and operated under a comprehensive commissioning process.
