We see two alternatives to plywood in housing today: oriented strand board (OSB) and foam boards. Both are great alternatives that can be complementary. However, OSB does not breathe as well as plywood and an air gap is needed. The gap is the “glue” that that helps out with the drying between the cladding and housewrap/OSB interface. And, according to the author, OSB and foam sheathings are learning to coexist very well with each other.
