ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010 compliance plays a significant role in the correct sizing of HVAC equipment and systems and overall building energy consumption. The lack of a standard method to optimize the maximum ventilation ratio (Zmax) can lead to significant oversizing of systems that result in wasted energy and money. The effect of varying ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010 parameters within design heating and cooling load models on overall system energy is often overlooked, despite the availability of all necessary data to quickly analyze variable optimization. A poorly defined Zmax leads to over ventilation of spaces and increases overall system airflow. By providing HVAC designers a method of optimizing this variable, significant amounts of energy and money can be saved.
