A simplified method for the ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2013 Ventilation Rate Procedure (VRP) is presented along with a new ventilation calculation spreadsheet, which provides an alternative to the ASHRAE 62MZCalc spreadsheet. The simplified method replaces the equations in Section A1.2.2 of the Standard and calculates the outside air (OA) intake as a fraction of primary supply air (SA) at the air handling unit (AHU) directly from the SA, the sum of zone OA requirements, and the critical zone OA fraction required in the supply air to the zone . Calculation of intermediate terms such as Zone Ventilation Efficiency is eliminated. Zone calculations remain unchanged from the 62MZCalc and include the options of pulling return air directly from different zones, use of demand ventilation control (DVC) using CO2 sensors, and dynamic reset of OA rates based on SA rate. The reformulated equations and spreadsheet are intuitive and easy to use and include optimization and visualization features that allow the user to fine-tune the ventilation system design for improved energy performance. The calculation method is simple enough to be easily programmed into the building management system (BMS) for optimal control of ventilation over the full range of SA airflow. Limited testing of the new spreadsheet in comparison with 62MZCalc indicates identical results from the two methods.
