The emergence of the microprocessor in the field of electronics has done more than just allow the replacement of complex random logic designs with LSI equivalents. The microprocessor has allowed engineers to replace and functionally enhance their designs to include monitor and control functions not previously feasible due to size and cost constraints.

An example of this is demonstrated in a field point monitoring and controlling remote unit in a building automation system. This paper addresses the functions made possible by the inclusion of a single chip processor in that system node. Those functions enhance system performance and ease installation and maintainability.
