Reaction to major loss of life fires in recent years has spawned increasingly complex requirements for smoke control, zones of refuge, and fire alarm systems. A proposed solution to mitigate the economic impact of these has been sophisticated electronic networks combining detection signaling and control. This paper presents counterargument calling for simplification and separation of such systems.
