Some thermal storage designs and installations are thoroughly successful. Others fail to achieve all of their predicted benefits, and some are disasters. This paper reviews actual experiences and observations and includes pointers for successful thermal storage including selection of good building candidates, consideration of alternatives, use of an optimized conventional plant as a basis for comparison, and pitfalls and solutions. The presentation on calculation of a 24-hour load includes six tables highlighting easily missed items in a 24-hour load estimate.
