Hermann Rietschel, a scientist and engineer, died just before World War I. His work spanned nearly 50 years, starting at Dresden Polytechnic and finishing as a professor in Berlin, occupying the world’s first chair of heating and ventilation. Rietschel laid the foundation of the scientific method for the industry, which, until the late nineteenth century, relied almost entirely on empirical methods. In Germany, engineers still speak of certain design techniques as “according to Rietschel.”
