Current computerized energy calculations are based on the structure and algorithms developed by the ASHRAE Task Group on Energy Calculations for the Heating and Cooling of Buildings. These were the first computerized procedures for hourly calculation and were produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), then the National Bureau of Standards, generously supported these activities. This paper reviews the history of energy calculation procedures, the role of the NIST in producing these algorithms, and the format of current programs.
