Unfortunately, the case history of the frost heaved concrete floor at this frozen food distribution warehouse is not uncommon. This facility originally installed an ambient air ventilating system … commonly referred to as a natural vent system. A close look at the original construction, a scrutiny of this facility’s maintenance and a look at how this problem was solved will provide some pointers on how to avoid frost heave problems for some facilities. This paper will also demonstrate the effectiveness of a simple method of thawing out a floor and returning the facility to normal operation when a natural air vent system fails.
