Scope

This Standard applies to newly produced type 2 clothes dryers (see Clause 3) hereinafter referred to as dryers, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials for use with:
a) natural gas;
b) manufactured gas;
c) mixed gas;
d) propane gas; and
e) LP gas-air mixtures.

The construction of dryers for use with the above-mentioned gases is covered in Clause 4.

The performance of dryers for use with the above-mentioned gases is covered in Clause 5.

This Standard also covers all electrical equipment, wiring, and accessories built in or supplied for use with the dryer. It covers only dryers whose electrical equipment, wiring, and accessories are intended to be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, or the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA C22.1. This Standard covers dryers having supply voltage ratings of 120, 208, 240, 277, or 480 volts.

This Standard contains SI (Metric) corresponding to the yard/pound quantities, the purpose being to allow the Standard to be used in SI (Metric) units. (Standard for use of the International System of Units (SI): The Modern Metric System, IEEE/ASTM SI-10, or ISO 80000–1:2009 Quantities and units – Part 1: General, are used as a guide in making metric conversion from yard/pound quantities.) If a value for a measurement and a corresponding value in other units are stated, the first stated value is to be regarded as the requirement. The given corresponding value may be approximate. If a value for a measurement and corresponding value in other units are both specified as a quoted marking requirement, the first stated unit, or both shall be provided.

Special construction provisions applicable to a clothes dryer designed for use with an optional listed conversion kit are outlined under Annex A (optional).

All references to “psi” throughout this Standard are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.

Clauses 7 and 8 include coverage for electrical equipment, wiring, and accessories built in or supplied for use with the dryer.

In this Standard, “shall” is sued to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a not accompanying a clause is to separate from the text the explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
