The simulation of building HVAC systems has received significant attention in recent years due to the increased attention to energy efficiency. Several well-known computer programs, such as BLAST and DOE-2, are capable of this type of analysis. Any such simulation effort requires the modeling of the performance characteristics of reciprocating compressor water chillers, which are frequently used in the HVAC systems of buildings.

The available full-and part-load performance data for reciprocating compressor water chillers have been analyzed, and a steady-state model capable of simulating the energy-rate characteristics of the system is developed. The water chiller models used in BLAST and DOE-2 are also examined and are simplified or altered to enhance computational efficiency; however, modeling accuracy is reduced.
