This paper presents the theory that was used in 1978 to establish the controlled environment for a clean operating room. It defines zones for the operating area and the peripheral areas. By focusing on the area where operations take place, contamination can efficiently be controlled. This critical area was termed the mainstream zone in this paper. The model described in this paper has been successfully used in China.
