This is the 30th article inspired by a DOE report covering energy-saving HVAC technologies. Centralized building controls, particularly as part of an energy management and control system (EMCS), have the potential to perform many different building functions. Optimal whole building control systems (OWBCS) are emerging products that aim to optimize building energy costs and consumption. They differ from EMCSs in their ability to make intelligent building control decisions—akin to the reasoning capabilities of a human expert—without human intervention.
