Approaches to water-efficient irrigation systems include installation of landscaping that is intrinsically drought-tolerant and use of irrigation technologies that minimize waste in use of irrigation water. As opposed to past practices of watering based on time of day, day of week, or water application rates, current best practices are focused on watering based on landscape needs, as detected and measured at the plant and soil level.
