Engineers are often pressured to help projects meet challenging budgets by cutting the scope of our designed solution, sometimes risking the integrity of our designs. A strategy that can often help meet those budget demands and at the same time maintain or even improve system performance is to employ components to meet multiple functions, even using components as functional parts of two different systems. This column discusses some successful examples of this strategy, citing both the advantages and the challenges that accompanied implementation.
