Argues that ground source heat pumps (SSHPs) are inherently simple, reliable and efficient systems. While they are not inexpensive, their first cost can be driven through the roof by overdesign, added complexity and ‘gadgets’ (added devices that may not always be needed). With this added complexity and cost comes reduced reliability, increased maintenance and in some cases higher operating costs. Goes on to compare the costs of simple and complex ground source heat pump systems for a small office building. Lists suggestions for a subset of GSHP systems referred to as ground-coupled heat pump systems.
