Proper design and application of the compressor in an air-conditioning and refrigeration system is one of the most important requirements for system effectiveness.

The compression ratio defines one of several compressor stress zones. Because the ratio affects the performance and reliability of a compressor or system it is a criterion on which the design and operation of a compressor or system must be evaluated. Recent interest in heat pump applications prompts a closer look at compressor reliability improvement at an elevated stress, high compression ration mode.

Computing the compression ratio for a given operating condition is a simple matter, but conceptualizing the pattern or map of compression ratios is not. This is especially true for a wide range of operating conditions, because the ratio is determined by two operating variables: discharge and suction pressures. This paper provides a perspective mapping of compression ratios on 2-dimentionsal operating variables. By examining the pattern of compression ration maps, a useful conceptualizing of the street zones can be made. Additionally such mapping will show a rather orderly arrangement of different compression ranges, thereby making it possible to approximate these ranges in a simple equation.
