Application of the variable-base degree-hour for calculating heating and cooling energy use in commercial buildings with single-zone package HVAC systems was examined. The estimated energy uses calculated using variable-base degree-hours were compared with similar values generated by the DOE-2 building energy analysis computer model. The results of comparison revealed a close correspondence between the two methods for most cases examined.
