This paper presents the studies on energy saving of all-season-type heat pumps by the capacity modulation of the scroll-type compressor. The scroll-type compressor utilized in this study has the following advantages over a conventional compressor: (1) low leakage during the compression process resulting in high efficiency; (2) high reliability and high efficiency because this compressor needs neither suction valve nor discharge valve; (3) 1/10 of torque change compared to the reciprocating compressors, resulting in low vibration and low noise. These distinguished features are suitable for the capacity modulation of heat pump. The annual energy saving effect of this prototypical heat pump with capacity-modulated scroll compressor is compared to conventional heat pumps with constant-capacity reciprocating compressors under the typical climatic conditions in Japan . The result shows that this prototypical heat pump has an APF 30% higher than conventional units.
