Recent developments in heat pump technology have been prompted by change from using refrigerating machines in heat pump design. In the last several years, many electric compression heat pumps have been developed and installed throughout Europe. Most European countries, however, produce their electricity by thermal power stations. To save energy, it is necessary to consider the primary energy input in regard to the whole chain of energy flow. The efficiency from primary energy to the electricity supply in a building is about 32%. Most European electricity is derived from coal, but in Germany, about 15% of the electricity is from gas-energized power plants. Therefore, the question must be, how can this gas be used more directly for heating purposes ; without a long bypass via electricity. The use of gas furnaces is no way to save energy, however, and during the second “energy crisis”, an investigation into the possibilities of heat-operated heat pumps was started. This development can be divided into two branches – the engine-driven compressing heat pump and the direct-fired absorption heat pump.
