Proposes a model that utilises artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to integrate the many stand-alone computers used by design engineers. The system employs a blackboard (BB) system architecture, and AI approach that has previously been used for integration of expert systems. (Case et al. 1990). The model extends the BB’s integration ability to commercial and user-written programs. Using additional AI techniques, the BB system acquires the added capability for truth maintenance and justification.
