The whole building, or integrated design process (IDP), wasconceived in the early 1990s by electric utilities and governmentagencies to reach high levels of energy efficiency in newconstruction. The objective was to apply energy-efficient technologiesthrough careful integration of all design elements, relyingon the synergy that exists between end-uses to maximizeenergy savings while minimizing some incremental costs.
