This “non-technical” paper, which was prepared for the ASHRAE Symposium on Noise Control and Specifications, centers on a design architect’s perception of the problems encountered in the daily design of buildings and the questions that surface during this process. A few solutions and, perhaps, some answers are offered.

Some of the problems referred to are: the air systems, equipment rooms and the type and installation of materials in buildings.

The questions center on space configurations, sound levels, and methods of design.

The answers are in the approach, not the specifics. The main thrust is a more creative and combined effort on the part of architects, engineers and acousticians to address the problem–in a common language and usable format.
