Describes the two forms of legionellosis – classical legionnaires’ disease (LD) and Pontiac fever. Estimates the annual number of fatalities from LD in the USA. Explains how LD is an environmental disease, the implications of this, how it is amplified and how it may be prevented. Outlines and illustrates schematically an effective preventive strategy in buildings. Discusses how the current approach to legionellosis compares with this model. Criticises the existing officially-sanctioned approach and calls for a truly integrated national prevention strategy.
