Be confident in emergency vehicle performance and reliability with the 2017 edition of NFPA 1911.
Conduct timely inspection, maintenance, and in-service testing of emergency vehicles to ensure prompt, reliable response and protect personnel on board. Apply the new NFPA 1911: Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles when developing a program for vehicle care.
Renamed for the 2017 edition, NFPA 1911 is updated and revised with a broader scope.
The term “fire apparatus” is replaced with “emergency vehicle” throughout the document to make requirements more inclusive and applicable to more than just fire apparatus. Other revisions include:
- A new chapter for the patient compartment of ambulances, for application alongside NFPA 1917: Standard for Automotive Ambulances
- A new chapter with requirements for trailers
- Changes that make the Standard consistent with NFPA 1901: Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus and NFPA 1906: Standard for Wildland Fire Apparatus
- New requirements for ultra-high-pressure pumps (UHPs)
- Explanatory information stating that NFPA 1911 requirements can apply to vehicles with a GVWR less than 5001 lb, if the AHJ so chooses
- Revisions in the chapter addressing daily/weekly checks, to ensure code and standard consistency as well as address currently accepted practices
- Changes to the tire load and speed rating of tires used on emergency vehicles to ensure the correct tires are being used based on application
- New requirements that wildland fire pumps and UHPs testing be done at least annually and when any listed repair is performed
Staying up-to-code with NFPA 1911 is essential for mechanics, maintenance shop supervisors, and testing company personnel — anyone responsible for inspecting, servicing, or testing emergency vehicles.
