The 2013 NFPA 36 works to ensure fire safety at solvent extraction plants.
Implement the new rules in NFPA 36: Standard for Solvent Extraction Plants to mitigate the specialized hazards involved in extraction of oils from agricultural commodities using hydrocarbon solvents.
Changes to this edition include guidance on the use of hand tools and revised guidance on electrical area classification:
- NFPA 36 extends its application to hand tools and requires management review of their use.
- Annex revisions provide guidance on the use of spark-resistant hand tools.
- Section 7.7 has been revised to recognize the Zone system of electrical area classification.
Other revisions correlate NFPA 36 with NFPA 61.
The 2013 NFPA 36 includes new exceptions to its requirements for fabric dust collectors to be located either outside or along an outside wall in a fire-resistive room inside the building. These changes align NFPA 36 with NFPA 61: Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Agricultural and Food Processing Facilities and provide the designer with more flexible approaches for dust collection.
Designers, builders, operators, inspectors, and enforcement personnel need today’s NFPA 36 to minimize risks associated with working in flammable vapor-laden atmospheres.
