A second-generation high-efficiency pulse combustion space heater was developed and field tested during two heating seasons at test sites located throughout the country. An earlier pulse combustion space heater design was modified to meet the design requirements and the marketing and production capabilities of the participating manufacturer. The space heater operates with an efficiency of 90% at a fuel input rate of 20 thousand Btu/h (5.86 kW). This free-standing space heater, with removable circulating air filter, can be installed at distances up to 15 ft (4.6 m) from the vent terminal and is easily convertible between natural and propane gas. Humidification of the circulating air is achieved by evaporating condensate collected in a pan at the bottom of the inner cabinet. This paper discusses the development of the basic model and the initial field test results.
