A detailed discussion of natural-convection-cooled fins is presented beginning with a vertical fin similarity solution and proceeding to various finned heat exchanger tubes. Natural convection fin design is complicated by the intimate connection between the heat conduction in the fin and the temperature-driven natural convection in the surrounding fluid. Both the fin conduction and the fluid convection must be solved simultaneously to obtain correct results, HVAC applications are reviewed and examples given to illustrate the use of the results presented.
