An interactive, graphics-based computer program for the design and analysis of vapor compression heat pump cycles was recently developed. A case study of the use of this program as an HVAC educational tool is presented. The program has been utilized by both undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering students for learning the details of heat pump thermodynamics. Undergraduate students are introduced to the program in a senior design course, where a series of heat pump design projects have been considered. A description of the capabilities of the program is presented here along with a description of the user interaction. The success of the program as an educational tool stems from the on-line graphic output. The student can rapidly investigate a series of cycle options on the computer screen in a single analytical session. The result is a more in-depth understanding of the major variables defining heat pump performance.
