A spreadsheet-based program using the f-Chart method has been developed for designing residential heating systems that combine active solar liquid heating with a conventional auxiliary energy source. The program was designed for use in an undergraduate course on solar energy utilization.
Using the physical description of the system and climatic data, the program produces monthly and annual values of deliverable solar energy as well as a life cycle analysis. Any stage of input or calculation can be observed and modified by the user. At his option, such details can be shown on the monitor, printed out for later study, or deleted altogether with only final monthly results shown. The last option would be the one used in an engineering design office.
