This paper describes the simulation and design of an 800 ft2 solar house that participated in the 2005 Solar Decathlon competition. The paper focuses on the innovative aspects of the house, particularly the building-integrated photovoltaic-thermal systems and motorized blinds control. The custom MathCAD program used for simulating the performance of the photovoltaic system is presented, including expected overall performance of the system with thermal and electrical energy generated. Also presented are simplified control algorithms, which consider the interaction between all of the above-mentioned systems. Preliminary simulation results show significant savings in winter and summer when using smart controls. Measured results from a test facility consisting of a mock up of the solar house are also presented; these results were recorded during pre-competition testing in the summer of 2005.
