A municipal ice rink in Montreal was modeled and its transientthermal behavior was evaluated for a typical year usinga zonal model coupled to building energy simulation software. The calculated temperatures of the air above the ice and thatof the southern wall are close to the corresponding measuredvalues. The results show the seasonal effects as well as thoseof the occupation and the resurfacing on the temperature of theice, the temperature of the air, and the average and maximummonthly load transmitted toward the brine. They also show theeffect of the airflow in the interior of the building on the temperaturesand loads. Parametric studies were carried out to determinethe effects of the ventilation air temperature and theaverage brine temperature on the refrigeration load, the icetemperature, and the air temperature above the stands.
