The investigation of the physics behind condensation-induced water hammer is of vital importance to the
refrigeration industry. The need to have a theory that accurately predicts the conditions that will cause the
failure accidents cannot be understated. Majority of the studies in the field of water hammer have utilized
water as the fluid (particularly in the nuclear industry). The numerical studies have produced models that are
one-dimensional in nature. Due to the lack of a comprehensive CIHS condensation model, a new approach is
required. The proposed plan will develop a phase change correlation model that is derived from first
principles. The model will be incorporated in to a simultaneously developing framework of pressure-based
multiphase compressible flow model with phase change, turbulence modeling and dispersion.

The objective of the study is the development of a CFD model with the ability to predict the occurrence of a
hydraulic shock for a given conditions.
