The Heat Balance Method (HBM) and the Radiant Time Series Method (RTSM) were introduced for cooling load calculations as part of ASHRAE 875-RP. (Pedersen, Fisher et al. 1997; Spitler, Fisher et al. 1997). The HBM had been previously developed for building simulation and applied to energy calculations; the RTSM was developed from scratch as part of 875-RP. Both methods were described in the book, Cooling and Heating Load Calculation Principles. Subsequently, both methods were described in the 2001 and 2005 editions of the ASHRAE Handbook–Fundamentals Volume and in the 5th and 6th Editions of the McQuiston, Parker and Spitler (2000; 2005) HVAC textbook.
