Sinking mineshafts has been a treacherous business, particularly in areas where there was wet soil or water stratas. Cave-ins were common and lives were lost. Europeans began freezing the soil surrounding the mineshaft as early as 1885. The first American application was likely at a sulphur mine in south Louisiana. The project was a major failure. The problem was later solved by Herman Frasch, who developed the Frasch process for sulphur extraction.
