Reviews current literature on the daylighting of atria. Explains how the propagation of daylight within the atrium and its adjoining spaces is affected by four elements – the transmittance of the atrium roof, the shape of the atrium, the reflectivities of the atrium surfaces and the penetration of daylight into adjoining spaces. Discusses each of these elements and concludes that further work is needed to verify and unify the disparate findings of many authors.
