This paper is an overview of evacuation analysis for professionals who are involved with any of the many aspects of smoke control. This paper focuses on estimating evacuation time using a hydraulic analogy to simulate people as fluid particles. Both motion on horizontal surfaces and stairs are addressed. The concepts of effective width and boundary layer are described. This paper goes beyond just an overview in that the usual method of evacuation calculation has been revised to simplify and speed up calculations. It is important that estimates of evacuation time include the pre-movement time and the evacuation efficiency. An example calculation is provided
in Appendix A.
