The 2007 ASHRAE Handbook—HVAC Applications provides an overview of many of the concepts and design recommendations for ground source heat pumps (GSHP). This paper provides a step-by-step method for design of the closed-loop subset system, ground-coupled heat pumps (GCHPs). Several ASHRAE and non-ASHRAE references are provided so that additional necessary design details can be considered. Many (but not all) of the design options are discussed, several primary equations are listed, and references for many of the more complex computations are provided. Although the practices suggested in this paper have evolved from GCHP experiences in the USA, many components can also be applied to the international community.
