Several government and private sector organizations, including ASHRAE, publish model codes, standards, and guidelines for use in the U.S. as well as other countries. These documents address the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of green buildings and are intended for voluntary as well as mandatory adoption. This seminar will describe different approaches used in model codes and standards to determine and compare the energy and environmental performance of new green buildings as well as existing buildings that are renovated and desire to be considered green. Site energy, energy cost, primary energy, and greenhouse gas emissions calculation options will be discussed. Pathways to implement these methods will also be identified, including mandatory, prescriptive, and performance pathways, as well as an outcome-based pathway. Major distinctions among approaches and pathways will be illustrated, as well as the benefits and challenges of the different options.
