The news is full of headlines such as “School to Close Again due to Mold,”1 “Mold Forces NJ School to Close for Rest of Classes,”2 “Washoe Widens Probe on School Mold,”3 or “Moldy Madison School Will Remain Closed Thursday.”4 Often, the mechanical systems or the envelope is blamed for moldy conditions. However, the school’s operation and maintenance plays a significant role in achieving and maintaining the indoor environment. Effective operation and maintenance starts at project inception and not at facility completion.
